Writer E L James says that she was inspired by the Twilight series and explained that the main character was based off of Bella. She meet with fans at this years Comic-Con where where 300 tickets were grabbed by fans of her book. Everyone that showed up was able to get their copy signed by the writer and ended up not being the normal Comic-Con group. Almost the entire group included older ladies with a few men mixed in, but non of them were dressed up as superman.
James explained that she loved all of the craziness of the convention and last time she was near the con she was at a small plaza mixed in with a bunch of zombies. She also explained that she loved meeting all of her fans and was happy that so many people could enjoy her books. She explained to MTV that she felt both Twilight and Shades were kind of like a Beauty and the Beast kind of story. They both have a base of reality with parts of fiction as a side.
Additionally after hearing that the main character was based off of Bella MTV interviewed Kristen Stewart and had her read out loud a few passages. Stewart hasn’t read the books yet but is excited to check them out. Her counterpart Robert Patterson was asked if he has read them or ever will and he joked that if he ever was to read them, “I’d just sit there and lick the pages.” Additional rumors have shown up that they might be making a movie of Shades and after Stewart’s reading do you think she should play the part?
